Design & Development Lead (C00267)

The Role In the short-term * Completing a technical "deep-dive", looking at end-to-end delivery processes across the whole of one of the company's core application delivery programmes * Providing ongoing technical expertise and leadership as necessary to the programme

In the longer-term
* The development of detailed plans and management reports for the CoE.
* The development and maintenance of the company's methodologies, standards and tools for applications design and development.
* Determining the frameworks (eg Spring) and design patterns that should be used by the outsource partners.
* Responsibility in the design stage of projects: drafting design terms of reference, producing high-level designs, monitoring quality of design work at intermediate checkpoints and accepting design deliverables.
Nb. these activities and artefacts support the solution's architectural blueprint - adding the further design detail that enables implementation to commence.
* Providing point inputs into the development stage of projects: drafting development terms of reference, monitoring quality of development work at intermediate checkpoints and accepting final deliverables.
* Evaluating the operational performance of SOFA outsource partners.
* Sharing experiences and learning points gained whilst working in assigned projects with the other members of the CoE.
* Collaborating with other elements within the Design, Delivery and Integration function and with all other IS functions, with the objective of delivering successful and predictable outcomes for projects they are assigned to.

Skills

Technical

* A deep and up-to-date understanding of best practice applications design and development; experience of complex applications implementation projects.
* Past experience of designing systems or components that have at least £1M in budget allocated (or design work delivered by 8+ developers over a year)
* Experience of working in projects and the whole project life cycle.
* Experience of managing outsourced partners over the design and development phases.
* A deep and up-to-date understanding of Java (J2EE) and SOA solutions (Oracle primarily, but also MS).
* Experience of Datamodelling, Oracle databases & SQL.
* Experience of alternative development techniques such as Agile, Iterative, etc. Specific knowledge of the Unified Process would be desirable.

General

* Ability to work to tight deadlines.
* Team player with the ability to work with others.
* Thorough, strong attention to detail and follows all tasks through to completion.
* Reliable, determined and highly motivated.
* Effective verbal and written communications skills.
* Can demonstrate innovative and creative approach to problem-solving.
* Ability to cope with uncertainty and drive through change.

Business Acumen

* Ability to grasp issues of a business nature and explain technical issues in business language.
* Experience of working in a large standards-based corporate environment.
* A good understanding of the Financial Services Industry would be a bonus but is not a pre-requisite.
